The Industry: 

The global Tuna industry is currently facing several challenges that could impact on its sustainability including: 

  • environmental impacts that have lead to the closure of Tuna long-line fishing in some areas around the world
  • the indiscriminate killing of seabirds and turtles (non-target species) whilst setting the gear causes a substantial loss of production and increases in cost
  • the current mitigation systems in use around the world are costly, inefficient and slow down process impacting on production, making them less commercially and environmentally viable
  • the environmental impact is reaching such levels that some albatross and turtle species are endangered of becoming extinct

Therefore, the Tuna long-line industry is desperately seeking a viable solution to protect the industry and the environment.

The Invention: 

The motivation was to create a cost-effective, environmentally safe device that would improve the catch efficiency of target species by decreasing the impact on and reducing the catch of sea birds and turtles in the Tuna long-line fishing process.

Meeting this challenge, the Smart Tuna Hook system was created using the following principles:
